Iceland to see increased Northern Lights visibility according to forecast

As stated on the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ website, increased Northern Lights visibility across Iceland has been predicted; for which is expected to occur over the next few months.

The institute states that Iceland will be amongst the highest in active aurora forms, meaning an increase in the glorious light shows. It recommends that the best time to view the aurora is near local midnight as this is when the most active forms occur. Throughout the months of August and September, Iceland is set to see a growth in Northern Lights activity as a by-product of increasing solar activity.

According to scientists, a ‘solar tsunami’ from the sun has caused levels of gas particles to increase and interact with the Earth’s magnetic field. The sun’s own magnetic fields have been dragging open and snapping back the Earth’s magnetic field, creating a continuous loop around our planet, which then produces electrical currents that react with the gases in our atmosphere, ultimately causing them to glow. These purple, blue, red and green colours are known as the Northern Lights, or the Aurora Borealis.
