New report explores Landsvirkjun’s renewable energy potential

A new report has been published by GAM Management hf. [GAMMA] exploring the renewable energy potential and future outlook of Landsvirkjun, the leading producer of renewable energy in Iceland. This report is based on four different investment and project scenarios, as well as its potential impact on the Icelandic economy.

Within the report, one example of the topics discussed includes the possibility of a submarine cable, connecting Iceland to the European energy market. The consequences of such an undertaking on the Icelandic economy are debated, by asking, for example, whether it would be more economical to only sell energy to the Icelandic market or to enlarge the market by connecting it to the European energy market. Landsvirkjun examines sub-sea cable to supply renewable energy to Europe

Landsvirkjun, the Icelandic energy provider, has been examining how realistic it would be to build the world’s longest submarine electric cable, which will enable sales of renewable energy to Europe.

The energy company’s study concentrates on the potential business models, markets and congestion management, whilst also focusing on the export and import of electricity based on price differences between the European and Icelandic market. Landsvirkjun is also studying the impact on the Icelandic power market, security of supply in the Icelandic power system and resource management in Iceland, with emphasis on the use of the hydropower capacity.
